Phthalic Acid Esters (PAEs) are a group of emerging organic contaminants that have become a serious issue because of their ubiquitous presence on the marine environment worldwide and for the endocrine disrupting effects in animals and humans. However, little is known about their distribution in the Ocean, mainly because of analytical difficulties and the high possibility of ambient sample contamination. Plastic debris in marine environment includes resin pellets, macro- and microplastic fragments, and contains additives such as PAEs that might be released in the aquatic environment in unknown proportion. In our work, we improved an analytical method for the determination of 8 PAEs, at trace levels in marine and fresh waters. In the first part of the... |

To improve the knowledge of the survival of enteric viruses in a marine environment, the influence of physico-chemical parameters (temperature, UV, salinity) on the survival of infectious poliovirus 1 and hepatitis A Virus (HAV) in seawater was first studied, the influence of suspended solids (SS) on poliovirus adsorption and survival in seawater was then evaluated and the detection of rotavirus genome in environmental samples (shellfish, river water, treated wastewater) was finally investigated. The results show that temperature has a major impact on virus survival in seawater as the time necessary to inactivate 90 % of the virus (T-90) is 671 days at 4 degrees C and only 25 days at 25 degrees C. Ultraviolet light (42 mW s cm(-2)) rapidly inactivates... |

The aim of the study is to determine how seawater is used in Ré island marine ponds (Charente-Maritime, France). Thus, we assessed the ecosystem functioning, estimated its historical evolution and determined the most suitable ways to improve current management processes. The knowledge of seawater management is essential to ensure wetland future and meet the numerous interests of wetland stakeholders, especially in term of seawater sharing. Consequently, it is necessary to consider the Ré island marine embanked wetland through its natural as well as human characteristics. Our work followed two research axes. First, a survey and a description of wetland activities were realized through their management types and their water use features, knowing that human... |

We report on an improved method for determining trace element abundances in seawater and other natural waters. The analytical procedure involves co-precipitation on iron hydroxides after addition of a Tm spike, and measurement by inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). The validity of the method was assessed through a series of co-precipitation experiments, using ultra-diluted solutions of a certified rock reference material (BIR-1). Results obtained for four natural water reference materials (NASS-5, CASS-4, SLEW-3, SLRS-4) are in agreement with published working values for rare earth elements, yttrium, vanadium and, when available, for hafnium, zirconium, thorium and scandium. A set of proposed values with uncertainties... |

The presence of a herpes-type virus has been demonstrated in various species of marine shellfish (bivalves and gastropoda) throughout different regions of the world (Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia), and is frequently associated with high mortality levels. Nevertheless, apart from the sanitary monitoring in mollusc farming, very little data is available about the detection of this type of virus in the natural populations of bivalves and about the persistence of such viruses in sea water. Various diagnostic tools have been developed in order to detect the oyster herpes virus (Ostreid herpesvirus, OsHV). The presence of this virus has been looked for by PCR in marine water samples coming from fattening ponds, in order to precise the natural... |

The effects of different environmental factors (nutrient deprivation, hyperosmotic shock, exposure to light) on enteric bacteria which have been transferred into the marine environment, have been studied experimentally (microcosms) by considering demographic, physiological and genetic responses in Escherichia coli or Salmonella typhimurium populations. Short-term experiments (less than or equal to 48 h) showed that nutrient deprivation induced limited changes in measured bacteriological variables, but when combined with hyperosmotic shock, it results in an energy charge decrease and inactivation of membrane transport. Light exposure mainly affects the colony-forming capacity of bacterial populations. Combining different stress factors confirmed the rapid... |
